The question that we're getting the most is: "Why just audio? Why didn't you do a site for video?"It's WAY too expensive. To create a site like YouTube to host video cigar content would be prohibitively expensive. Building a simple site to host videos wouldn't be the expensive part. The expensive parts are the bandwidth required to stream the video to consumers and the storage of the video files. Video files are a lot larger than audio files. The amount of bandwidth and storage required for video would end up costing tens of thousands of dollars a month if we went with a hosted solution. Building our own datacenter for the site would cost into the hundreds of thousands, at the low end. I know we don't like to admit so but, cigars are a very niche product. We'd never be able to sell enough advertising to pay the bills...
I make video content. Can I use the audio from that content on your station? Yes. You'll want to be aware of and edit out any long pauses. Nothing kills a radio show faster than dead air.
What's the catch? No catch. Here's the simple theory: Creators need a place to get their content consumed. We need content to make this work. It's a symbiotic relationship. Creators keep any advertising dollars they can get for their shows. Cigar Radio keeps any advertising dollars we can pull in from the Cigar Radio website and placing ads between shows. Money doesn't change hands between creators and Cigar Radio.
Can I request that my show be aired on a specific day/time? Yes. For now. To start with, time slots will be handed out on a first come / first served basis. Early adopters are going to get their pick of the better time slots. At some point that will change. We'll move to a model where the better performing shows will get their pick of time slots first. Ratings, ratings, ratings... Also, keep in mind that Cigar Radio is streaming 24/7/365. Your show will likely air multiple times a week. Once at your regular, scheduled time and also at other times during the week when there are no shows regularly scheduled (such as overnight).
Since this is radio, can I use music in my content? Yes. Maybe. Kinda... Here's the deal with music: You have to have licensing and pay for the use of music if it's not royalty-free. Cigar Radio has licensing from both BMI and ASCAP. So, if you'd like to use music licensed by ASCAP or BMI, and you're not going to use the same content on another site that Cigar Radio does not control, go ahead. You'll just need to provide Cigar Radio with a list of the music you used in your show and we'll cover the cost.
Can I use the Cigar Radio streaming player on my own site? Absolutely. Just contact us for the embed code.
What file formats do you accept? MP3 and M4A (AAC) files are supported. MP3 files must be in CBR (Constant Bit Rate). Sample rate must be 44.1kHz.
What audio quality can my listeners expect? Cigar Radio broadcasts at Studio sound quality of 256kbps. For comparison, CD quality is 192kbps. As long as we're provided a quality audio file, your listeners will hear you clear and crisp.
Can I do a live show? Yes. All you need is a computer (PC or Mac), a decent internet connection and a microphone. If you currently do live streaming for your show using a computer (PC or Mac), it would be very easy to stream your audio to Cigar Radio at the same time by installing a small piece of software. Streaming live to Cigar Radio from a cell phone or tablet is not currently supported.
I really don't want to do any extra work... We can download your podcast automatically and add it to the rotation. All we need is the address for the RSS feed and we can download the show and play it with absolutely no work on your part!
